Columbus’ relationship with the city of Dresden has been a prosperous one. Since the signing of the sister city agreement in 1992, Columbus and Dresden have sponsored many activities, including exchanges in cultural arts, education and sports.

Dresden Sister City, Inc. coordinates activities relating to the Dresden – Columbus relationship. The most recent DSCI exchanges included the following:

January – March 2009:

Three Columbus teenagers and one youth theatre director spend six weeks in Dresden to rehearse and perform a play together with four Dresden teenage actors under the direction of Armin Beber, director at the Dresden Theater der Jungen Generation. The performance is a huge success among English learners in Dresden. In May 2009, the teenagers go back to Dresden to perform the very successful play again during the National Youth Theatre Festival. This exchange was mainly supported by the City of Dresden, the U.S. American Consulate General in Leipzig, Germany, and various other German sponsors.

March 2006

On invitation of the City of Dresden, a delegation of Columbus city and Franklin County officials, including Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman and Franklin County Board of Commissioners President Paul Brooks, travel to Dresden to participate in the celebration of the city’s 800th anniversary celebrations.

January – February 2005

Susanne Böhmel and Rosemarie Lampe, two puppeteers from Dresden, visit Columbus to perform two of their plays at various schools, churches, German culture clubs and at The Ohio State University during their two-week stay. “The Fisherman and His Wife” is performed in English, whereas “Das Tapfere Schneiderlein” is performed in German.
